Trout in the Classroom 2014

I am excited to be a part of the Trout in the Classroom project again this year and I know students will be excited as well!

We will be working with Trout Unlimited (TU) and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) to raise 100 Rainbow Trout in our classroom.  We will receive the eggs at the end of January/beginning of February and watch the life cycle of the rainbow trout in our fish tank habitat for approximately 12 weeks.  This project is a real-life application to the Science Reporting Topic 1-3, 6-7 that we cover in the 3rd trimester.

We will have our own classroom fish biologist, Tony Lamansky, from the IDFG that will come in and help teach our class about the trout as well as what he does with the state as a biologist.

I encourage parents/siblings to come in and see the progress of our fish as they hatch and grow in our classroom!  We will be releasing the trout one day after school at McDevitt Pond where Mr. Lamansky will be on-hand to help teach anyone who wants to learn, how to fish.  I will update specific dates as I become aware of them.

*The following are pictures from the 2013-14 school year Trout in the Classroom program.

This is Mr. Lamansky brining us our trout eggs on 1/22/14.

Here is an upclose view (with the help of our document camera) of the trout eggs that were delivered.  Can you see the black dots?  Those are going to be the eyes!

Today (1/27/14) the eggs have already started hatching!  (This is the earliest this has happened!)  We took a few out of the tank to get an up-close view under the document camera.

Fish dissection!  (4/4/14)

Mr. Lamansky came today with fish from the Nampa Fish Hatchery to dissect with the students.  Students worked in pairs as Mr. Lamansky walked them through the dissection and pointed out different parts of the fish.  Although they were hesitant at first, as you can see by some of our pictures, they got into the activity pretty quickly!

Here are some pictures I have received so far from the fish release on April 10th:

  3. The fish release will be taking place on Wednesday, April 22nd at McDevitt Pond (at the corner of McMillan Rd. and Eagle Rd.). We will release them at 4:15pm. (Or, as soon as Mrs. Spenner can get the fish there!)
It is a "Fish Trailer" day at the pond so Idaho Fish and Game Department will be on hand with fishing supplies and free fishing for everyone to fish! I hope all our families can make it!
