The Never-Ending Project...

We have been working on this "Running Late" project since the end of 1st trimester and it has been a big learning experience for me (and the kids...but especially me!!).  We started off by brainstorming a time when we were late to something.  Then we wrote, revised, edited, typed, illustrated, and finally recorded our stories!  I uploaded, erased, re-uploaded, erased, turned the videos into Imovies, created a YouTube account, and uploaded again!!  (Unfortunately, we also lost 3 videos in the process that students are re-creating.)

The videos are all listed as "Unlisted" so you will need the following link to access your student's video.  Remember...this was our first attempt!!  We will be making another video after we get back to school in January.

Brrr!!

Hello families!

I hope you are all keeping warm this weekend!  Looks like we might get some snow.  Hopefully it will warm up a bit outside for next week so we can get out at recess time!

I sent home Scholastic book orders yesterday.  If you would like to order, they need to be in by Monday to make it before the holiday break.  If your order is a Christmas present and you would like me to keep it a secret, just let me know and I will hold the books for you to pick up!  There are more book options online at www.scholastic.com.  Also, I have posted instructions for online ordering on the blog under "Scholastic Orders."

A note from RMHS:
Rocky Mountain High School has decided to bring Santa to town. We are creating our first annual "Santa is Coming to...Rocky" in hopes to raise money for a local Make-A-Wish organization. All proceeds will be going to the local charity, so we intend to make it a big event.

The basic information:

Date: December 21st
Time: 10:00am - 2:00pm
Where: Rocky Cafeteria
Price: $5 for 4 and up

Activities: Picture with Santa, candy cane decorating, cookie decorating, coloring tables, snowflake making, puppet making, etc.

Hot Chocolate and candy canes will also be provided until supplies are gone.

Hopefully with your help we will be able to raise enough money to make some wishes come true this holiday season.

Have a great weekend!

Trading Post/Report Cards

Hello families!

Tonight, look for your student's report card to come home in a manila envelope.  The report card is yours, but please sign and return the folder and envelope.  Your student will receive a green slip if they bring it back tomorrow.  :)

Tomorrow is our first Trading Post.  Your student should know if they are participating or not (based on the green slips they earned).  It will take place at 2:45pm and should be complete by 3:30pm.  Students are encouraged to bring items from home to sell.  These can be, but are not limited to:  old toys, games, puzzles, homemade bookmarks, drawings, books, and stuffed animals.  We only ask that they not bring electronics (due to the actual cost) and food items (due to food allergies).  Students do not have to bring anything to sell if they do not want to, but the more we have the more fun it is for everyone!

Also, don't forget tha tomorrow is also Licorice Friday.  For only 25 cents your student can buy 2 pieces of licorice to eat at last recess.

Have a great week off and a very thankful Thanksgiving holiday!

End of Trimester 1

Hello families!

We have made it through the first trimester of the year!  I am finishing up report cards now and will send them home on Thursday, November 21st.

As part of our 4th grade behavior rewards, we will have "Trading Post" next Friday.  Any student that has earned 45 green slips may participate.  Students not participating will be doing an alternate activity during that time.  During Trading Post, students may bring any item from home that they do not want any more to sell.  (This is like a garage sale or flea market.)  We only ask that students do not bring food items, due to allergies, or electronics, due to cost.  Students set the price to buy and sell items using the classroom money they have earned.  (Each green slip= $1.)  We will be doing this the last hour of the day.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CLASS!! Our generous students raised $189.51 toward feeding hungry families for Thanksgiving!  I am so proud of their generosity! They were rewarded with an ice cream party from Albertsons on Thursday afternoon.

Finally, we have a new student, Meila, joining our class on Monday.  The kids (Especially the girls...since they will now outnumber the boys!) are excited to get to know her and welcome her into our classroom!

Have a great weekend!

Moms and Muffins

Hello families!

We have a busy few days coming up as we finish out the 1st trimester of the year.  We are working on a personal narrative in class and will be typing, illustrating, and recording our stories over the next few days. We have been doing a lot of end of trimester assessments as well.  I will be working on report cards next Friday (11/15/13) when the students are out of school and we will send them home on Thursday, November 21st.

Tomorrow is Moms and Muffins.  I hope that all our moms (or any other important lady in your student's life) are able to come and share in a muffin before school beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Have a great evening!

November

Hello families!

Thank you to all the families that helped out (with supplies, food, or activities) with our Halloween Party!  Everyone seemed to have a great time.  I appreciate your willingness to be a part of our fun!

We have started a new spelling assessment.  Hopefully you saw it yesterday.  Since students are supposed to be using the correct spelling in everyday writing, we are now going to be practicing this for our weekly test.  I have sentences written, some are correct and some have errors (spelling skill related).  Students are to find the misspelled words and write them correctly.  This is a difficult new skill for them and last week the tests were not incredibly stellar.  That was to be expected!  The students now know what to look for and felt more comfortable today.  I will have the tests graded and returned next week.  I think this will be a better format for assessment with regards to our reporting topics in English Language Arts (ELA).  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

The November Scholastic book orders came home yesterday.  If you missed out on a book at the Book Fair here at school, here is your chance to still get a book!  The orders are due next Wednesday.  If you would like to browse or purchase on-line, the instructions are on the right-hand side under "Scholastic Book Orders."

Have a great weekend and remember to set your clock back 1 hour Saturday night!  Enjoy that extra hour of sleep!

End of Red Ribbon Week and Halloween Party

Hello families!

Tomorrow is the last day of Red Ribbon week.  We are dressing up in jeans and a red shirt to show we are a "Jean"-ous to not take drugs.

We have our Halloween party next Thursday (10/31) from 2:45-3:45 p.m.  I have set up a "Sign-up Genius" account to help with volunteers.  (We do not currently have a Room Parent.)  I have sent out a link to the parents that originally signed up to help with parties, however, if you would like to help as well, here is the link...

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4FACA822A6F58-halloween

In addition to the sign-up, Mrs. Oltman is providing drinks.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Have a great evening!

Book Fair, 1st Tee, Red Ribbon Week, and more!

Hello families!

There is a lot going on around our school in the coming week!  Tomorrow is licorice/spirit day.  If your student would like to purchase 2 pieces of licorice, the cost is $0.25.  Also, there is a contest for school spirit!  Have your student wear their Discovery shirt, wristband, or Discovery colors:  red, white, and blue to participate!

Please check out the notes from Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Campbell along with information on some local upcoming entertainment.

Have a great night!

Mrs. Spenner

A note from Mrs. Jensen:

This week Discovery's 4th and 5th grade PE classes participated in The First Tee of Idaho's outreach junior golf program.  Students were able to experience the world of golf with stations set up all around the gym offering a variety of opportunities to practice golf skills.  While the outreach program allows just a couple days of instruction, The First Tee does offer a National School Program.  By becoming a “First Tee National School”, Discovery would receive all of the age appropriate golf equipment used in class, along with instruction and lesson plans for the PE Teacher and a character education program complete with lessons/posters for every classroom teacher.  It would be great to see Discovery become a First Tee National School!  Last year through small fundraising efforts and family donations, we raised about $1,800.00, which means we are just about $2000 shy of our goal for securing the program at our school. Fundraising opportunities are coming soon!!  Stay tuned, and thank you in advance for your support in bringing The First Tee to Discovery!

Thanks,

Mrs. Jensen, PE Teacher

Thank you!

Hello families!

Thank you to all the families that took time from their day to meet with me at conferences!  I appreciate being able to work as a team with you to help your student be the best they can be!

I have updated the "Looking Ahead..." for next week.  However, looking a bit further ahead, we have a Halloween party coming up!  I have many parents offer to help, but I am looking for someone who would be willing to organize the food and another person to organize a simple craft (one that could be completed in 10-15 minutes).  If you would be willing to do that, please send me an e-mail or comment on this post!

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Parent/Teacher conferences

Hello families!

I am looking forward to meeting with each family to discuss your child's progress so far this year.  If you are unable to make it to conferences, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can find a time to reschedule.  I need to meet with each family.

I have updated the "Looking Ahead..." page for the week.  We will not be having a story or spelling list this week due to the short week.  (Remember, there is not any school for students on Thursday or Friday.)

All of the 4th grade classes have started intervention groups in both reading and math.  Students are switching teachers for math and reading according to their own specific needs.  Intervention groups meet 5 days a week for 30 minutes each.  I will discuss this with families in more detail at conferences.

Have a great week!

Thank you!

Hello families!

Thank you to all the families that were able to make it to Parent Night this past Tuesday!  I hope I was able to answer any questions you had.  One suggestion was that I e-mail everyone each week when I update the blog with information.  I have put together a distrubution list of parent e-mails, but if you would like to opt-out of that weekly e-mail, just let me know and I can take you off the distrubution list.

I have added a page on my blog called "Looking Ahead...".  I will be updating this page weekly with what we will be covering the upcoming week in class.  I hope this will be helpful with homework, etc.

Tomorrow if "Spirit Day."  If your child has any Discovery clothing, I encourage them to wear it tomorrow!  The PTA is starting a contest between classrooms to see who has the most school spirit!

We finished our first round of MAP testing this week (Math).  We will be continuing our MAP testing next Thursday for the Reading test.  Please do your best to have your student here, well-rested, and fed that day.  :)

Conferences are quickly approaching!  We will have conferences on Wednesday evening (10/9/2013) and all day on Thursday (10/10/2013).  If you need a specific time to meet (morning, afternoon, or evening), please let me know as soon as possible.  We will be scheduling them next week beginning with siblings first (to get them back-to-back).  If I do not hear from you, I will set a time for you.

Have a great evening!

21st Century Parent Survey

Hello families!

Eian Harm, from the Meridian School District, has asked that parents from our school take an informational survey to help them look at different types and amounts of technology use in classrooms.

   21st Century Parent Survey

Please take a few moments to complete the survey.  Thank you!

Also, don't forget about Open House for parents Tuesday night starting at 5pm!  I hope to see everyone there!

Happy Friday!

Hello families!
We have a lot going on in our classroom!  First, I want to remind everyone that we have individual pictures next Wednesday, Sept. 11.  Picture forms were sent home last night in our folders.
I also sent home our first Scholastic book order.  If you would like to order online, I have included the class code (GX9YZ) on the form.  If you would like me to order them for you, just return the form with a check made out to "Scholastic" by next Wednesday, Sept. 11th.  Sorry, I cannot accept cash.
We have created a class promise in our room and made "mini-me's" to represent our agreement.  We will talk about it at the beginning of each week as a reminder of how we need to act each week.

We started working with our technology this week as well.  The netbooks were in use for ThinkThroughMath (TTM) and some of the students and I took turns writing with the Slate/projector.  I hope to have the Ipads up and running next week as we begin reading and math groups!

Many of the students would like to get on to TTM at home.  It is easy to do and students can get some extra math practice as well.  Just go to:  http://lms.thinkthroughmath.com to log on.
The student login is your student's first name, last initial, and class number.  The password is their 8 digit birthday.
For example:
Sally Jones #7 who has a birthday on May 4, 2004 would be:
Username:  sallyj7
Password:  05042004

Just let me know if you have a question about this!  That's all for now!

Have a great weekend!

End of first week!

Hello families!

We have made it through our first week together.  We are already working on Idaho History, Language, Math, and we began our weekly Reading story today as well!  Due to the long weekend, I did not send any homework home with students today.  (I know they are all sad about that!)  If students do not finish today's work on Tuesday though, I will send it home with them Tuesday night.

I have asked students to bring in something to use as an eraser for their wipe boards.  This could be an old sock, piece of material/towel, etc.  I just don't want us to use up all the tissues before the end of September!  The students will keep this in their desk.

We started working with our Bricks in class today.  I have added a link called "BrickLab" with a few pictures I took of the kids working on their builds.  Today we made printing presses.

Remember, there is not any school on Monday due to Labor Day.  I hope that you all have a safe and fun weekend!

First Day!

Hello families! What a great first day of 4th grade!

We organized our supplies today. If your student is still in need of something, please let me know and  I would be happy to talk with our counselor to assist you anyway I can.

Tonight students have homework. Everyone has a library checkout form to be signed and returned to school in order to check out books next week. Also, a few students have a "Wanted" poster to finish for the hallway bulletin board.

Have a great night and thank you for sending me such great kids to work with this year!
